BAT 9-month AGN Catalog

Allsky aitoff projection of BAT Survey AGN sources.

Red dots are soft sources, blue are hard sources,
and the dot diameter is proportional to the source flux.

9-Month BAT Survey

These web pages present the AGN detected in the first 9 months of all sky survey data collected by the BAT coded mask hard X-ray instrument. A complete description of the data and techniques for source detection and analysis can be found in the catalog paper (Tueller, J. et al. 2008, ApJ, 681, 113; ADS or arXiv:0711.4130). The 9-month AGN survey contains 153 sources.

The 4.8 sigma threshold in the 9-month survey covers 80% of the sky at a flux threshold of 3.5x10-11 ergs/cm2/s in the 14-195 keV band and covers one third of the sky near the ecliptic poles at 2.5x10-11 ergs/cm2/s.

A selection of the most important columns from the main table in the paper is presented below; all the data on a particular source can be viewed on the page for that particular source.

The more recent 22-month BAT survey is now online at: http://swift.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/swift/results/bs22mon/

BAT

The Burst Alert Telescope on the Swift gamma-ray burst satellite is a hard X-ray (14-195 keV), large area (5000 cm2), coded mask instrument with a very wide field of view (~70x100 degrees). BAT can localize point sources in the all sky survey to a precision of 2–5 arcminutes depending on source significance; the spectral resolution of BAT is 5 keV (fwhm) at 60 keV.

Images

The BAT images are produced by mosaicking together all the individual pointings from the first 9 months of the Swift mission. Images are produced in five bands: 14-25, 25-50, 50-100, 100-195 keV, and the total band, 14-195 keV. The survey produces two types of maps, significance maps and flux maps. The significance maps represent the signal to noise ratio at any point on the sky. The BAT tool ‘batcelldetect’ can be used to find the significance of any desired point. The flux maps are in units of BAT counts per second per illuminated detector; the fluxes reported for sources in the data data have been normalized to the Crab and are in units of 10-11 ergs/cm2/sec.

The BAT all-sky images are served on the Skyview web site. Five degree cut-out images of the area around each source are presented on the pages for the individual sources along with three color optical images from the DSS. The pixel scale of the BAT maps is 5 arcminutes.

Lightcurves

Count rates are extracted for all sources in the field of view of each of the indvidual BAT pointings. These source count rates are then binned on timescales ranging from 2 to 128 days and a lightcurve produced. The systematic errors on the rates in the lightcurve are mostly at the 10% level and below. Lightcurve plots are available on the pages for each individual BAT source.

Spectra

The source flux from the 9-month survey is given for each of the four survey bands in a pha fits file bundled with a diagonal response matrix fits file on the individual source pages.

a The Swift name given is based on the source coordinates from the latest analysis of Swift data except that where a name has been previously published it is kept to avoid confusion.
b The ID name given is that of the entry in the NED database (except in those few cases there is none).
c J2000 coordinates for the identified counterpart.
d 'y' indicates that the source is at |b| > 15° and so, if the SNR is also > 4.8 σ (indicated by 'y*'), is included in the quantitative analysis.
e 10-11 ergs/cm2/sec (14-195 keV band)
f 14-195 keV band
** We classify 2MASX J09180027+0425066 as a QSO because its luminosity is greater than 1044.5 ergs cm-2 s-1 , and as type II because of its very strong narrow OIII lines in SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey).
