Racusin (PSU), P. Roming (PSU), T. Sakamoto (GSFC) on behalf of the Swift team: At 20:03:20 UT, Swift-BAT triggered and located a source (trigger=173904). The spacecraft slewed promptly after the end of the image trigger. The BAT on-board calculated location is RA,Dec 312.395d,+53.054d {20h 49m 35s,+53d 03' 14"} (J2000), with an uncertainty of 3 arcmin (radius, 90% containment, stat+sys). All we have at this time is the TDRSS lightcurve. This plus the fact that this is a 192-sec image trigger means that we can not say if this trigger is due to a real GRB, a hard x-ray transient, or a noise event. We note that the galactic latitude is 6 deg.

The BAT on-board calculated location is RA,Dec 252.123d,-59.207d {16h 48m 29s,-59d 12' 25"} (J2000), with an uncertainty of 3 arcmin (radius, 90% containment, stat+sys). The spacecraft did not slew because of the Sun observing constraint. The location is 36 deg from the Sun, and it will not be observable by Swift NFIs for at least three weeks. This was a 64-sec image trigger with a 9-sigma significance in the image domain. The BAT lightcurve shows hints of emission, but it is not possible to separate source variations from background variations in the rate domain. The full data set from the next Malindi downlinks in a few hours will allow the separation of source from background.

Tueller (GSFC) on behalf of the Swift-BAT team: At 15:44:37 UT, the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) triggered and located on-board GRB 050318. The spacecraft did not automatically slew to the burst location because of an observing constraint. The orbit is such that we just started the approximate 6-hour gap in telemetry downlink orbits, so it will be ~7 hours before we get the full data set on this burst and can say anything more than what is available from the real-time TDRSS messages. Using the time interval of the trigger of the burst (0.5 sec), the ground-calculated location is RA,Dec 49.651,-46.392 (J2000) with an uncertainty of 3 arcmin (radius, including a systematic uncertainty, 90% containment).

As a result, no prompt XRT position was reported to the ground. However, analysis of the XRT data shows a bright, rapidly fading point source at: RA(J2000): 14 38 17.87 DEC(J2000): -34 45 56.6

During this four minute period the XRT detected a very bright and rapidly fading X-ray source. The initial position, based on the raw image data with no correction for stellar aberration, is: RA(J2000) = 18:32:25.8 Dec(J2000) = +42:22:0.4.
